History

Las Vegas is not the lively city we all know today. It started out as “the meadows” because of its abundant wild grasses and desert. Nomadic Paleo-Indians were the first settlers followed by a young Mexica scout and then, Antonio Armijo and his troupe. Las Vegas was founded as a city in 1905 and in 1931, when Nevada legalized gambling and became less strict with its divorce laws, this served as the pivotal year for the city. Further development occurred after the World War II. Many hotels and big entertainment started to open to lure more guests. Rapid development followed and the rest as they say is history.

GOING DARK

In a state well-known for the shimmering lights of the Las Vegas Strip, Nevada is getting some international recognition for something decidedly darker. It’s the state’s night skies. In fact, rural Nevada has some of the blackest nighttime skies on the planet. This year the isolated Massacre Rim Wilderness Study Area, in the state’s far northwest reaches, was named an International Dark Sky Sanctuary, becoming only the 10th place on Earth to receive such a designation. Read more here.
Avid stargazers will find pleasure knowing that Nevada has one with the darkest skies on Earth. You do not have to travel as far as Northern Chile, the prettiest and most desolated place on earth to get a good view of the sky. Residents of rural Nevada have long enjoyed the nighttime skies and this year, this may draw more people in their area to witness the International Dark Sky Sanctuary. Receiving such designation will turn Las Vegas as another tourist magnet. This will showcase the place as a destination not just for casino and gaming fanatics but to nature lovers as well.
